DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nCentering the voices of community organizers and land stewards in the Dominican Republic and its Diaspora\, join us for a panel discussion on the impact of government policy and systems of oppression on our access to food. \nTogether we’ll build a shared understanding of what’s led to our dependency on a failed food system while panelists speak to creating alternatives that prioritize their communities’ needs. \nWe’ll hear from Ruth Pion (AfroHistoria y Junta de Prietas)\, Paola Estevez (Barrio Alante)\, Altair Rodriguez (Finca Tierra Negra)\, Vanessa Garcia Polanco (Young Farmers Coalition) on accessible information-sharing\, growing food in both rural and urban environments\, teaching and supporting the remembrance of ancestral practices\, and implementing practices that mitigate climate chaos. \nBeyond growing food organically and centering farm-to-table initiatives\, food sovereignty urges us to take control of\, and redefine\, a just food system that prioritizes life over profit. \nWe hope attendees will join us ready to hold space for this challenging conversation\, share insight from personal experiences\, and be open to contributing to our current work. Together\, we’ll work towards mitigating harm and becoming clearer on our role(s) in the fight for a just food system. \nThis is a hybrid event: the in-person event will take place at the Woke Foods restaurant in Cabarete\, with live-streaming access via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to discover a world of delicious plant-based foods! Explore your kitchen skills through our hands-on plant-based cooking class. Our cooking class this month will be in partnership with The Horticulture Society and focused on summer recipes using seasonal and local ingredients! \nOur class will be taught by Chef Ysanet Batista. The class will provide a space of positivity\, community building\, and learning that will give you the confidence to go home and share your new learned knowledge with your people. Check out photos from our recent cooking class. \nWhat To Expect:\n\nClasses are 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours unless otherwise noted\nYou will work with other students in groups\nHands-on classes are limited to 15 students\nYou will be standing\, cooking and working for most of the class (please let us know if you have accessibility needs)\nPlease wear comfortable\, closed-toe shoes and have long hair tied back\nYou will enjoy a sit down communal dinner with the dishes prepared in the class\nStudents will receive recipes in paper and electronic form\nWoke Foods recipes are developed using common cooking ingredients that may or may not be specified in the menu titles\, including various fruits and vegetables\, nuts\, spices\, wheat flours\, etc. If you have a food allergy\, please email us at connect@wokefoods.com before attending the class.
